Unknown device connected to my router?

As I was looking at the configuration of my router, I found a "Generic device" connected to my WLAN. This is not a connection that I authorized, but I recognize the name attached to that device, which is that of the computer scientist father of a person whom I had allowed to share my connection. What does this mean? Are they able to monitor that connection?
